#3 Sultans of swing (Dire Straits - Top Ten)

This song could have easely been a nr.1 on this list, and for many years it certainly was! But in this company number three is not a bad place to be! Probably the coolest Dire Straits song ever, sooo layback but still insanely groovy. Back to basic with only guitars, bass and drums, and it should not be played in any other way, it's just a perfect little peace of music.

"You get a shiver in the dark, it's raining in the park but meantime..."

You'll find this song on the "Dire Straits" album.

  1. This song is marvellous! I remember it being played a LOT one summer in the late seventies. As I listened a lot to English and pirate stations (Radio One and Caroline) this song really left it's mark. As it probably did to others as well, as it was aired a whole lot on Norwegian National Broadcasting ofcourse. And we could read the buzz about this young an up-and-coming band, with this finger picking guitarist. And the solo! On me, it made the same kind of impression as the "Hotel California" (Eagles) and "Highway Star" (Deep Purple) solos. Delicate, slightly virtuoso, melodic. "Sultans" is my number one Dire Straits-song. My other favourites from their debut is "Down to the waterline", "Six blade knife" (nice bass-playing) and "Water of Love".
